Tyus Jones is Your King of the Summer

Tyus Jones is balling. (Brace Hemmelgarn/USA TODAY Sports)

Tyus “Thus” Jones is this year’s King of the Summer. Minnesota‘s rising 2nd year PG starred with averages of 19.3 points, 6.3 dimes & 4 boards/contest.

Jones joins the likes of Damian Lillard, Jonas ValanciunasKyle Anderson with this distinction…while hoping to have better success than Josh Selby & Glen Rice Jr. simultaneously. Winning the award is the first step in Jones’s evolution into a reliable backup point guard who can score & distribute.

With Minny’s recent acquisitions (hiring Tom Thibodeau, drafting Kris Dunn), the onus on producing victories and making a postseason push is at an all-time high. And Jones, shaking off a disjointed rookie campaign in which he contributed only 4.2 ppg in limited minutes, has a real shot to join the rotation & play a tremendous role on a young, yet emerging team a la Josh Richardson (MIA) & Raul Neto (UTA) a year ago.

So What Did He Do This Summer? Went out and balled.

Jones showed off a new bag of tricks (pull-up Js, floaters, driving & thriving) while leading the last-seeded Wolves to a championship appearance later on tonight.

And if you wanna dig a little deeper (& possibly reach?), this is great for Jones because capping off victory tonight is a bit of positive reinforcement, don’t you think? By winning, his return to the confident floor general who helped lead Duke to a Nat’l Title is complete.

Whether TJ wins or not, he’s on the right track to secure a spot in the big leagues (side note: Thibs LOVES semi-quick, scoring PGs for some reason).

So give it up for Tyus Jones…this year’s* King of the Summer.
