“The Scoop: March 30th Edition”

Chicago is still alive in the playoff hunt. (Kevin Jairaj/USA TODAY Sports)

Cleaning up last night’s action in the Association…

BULLS 98, Pacers 96

(Thomas J. Russo/USA TODAY Sports)

Stats Leaders:

PTS: Nikola Mirotic – 28 | REBS: Pau Gasol – 11 | ASTS: Gasol – 7

Top DOG of the Night: Nikola Mirotic (28 points, 10 boards, 7 threes)

Quick Recap: Nikola Mirotic was our Top DOG but Jimmy Butler‘s game-winning jumper pushed Chicago to a much needed road victory in Indy. Both teams combined for 26 points in the fourth – a dull capper to an otherwise exciting game (before Butler’s nonchalant J).

Takeaway: Chicago stays alive in the playoff race, now just 2 GB Indy for the East’s final spot.

Nets 105, MAGIC 139

(Kim Klement/USA TODAY Sports)

Stats Leaders:

PTS: Andrew Nicholson – 24 | REBS: Thomas Robinson – 12 | ASTS: Elfrid Payton – 12

Top DOG of the Night: Andrew Nicholson (24 points, 9-9 shooting)

Quick Recap: ANDREW NICHOLSON IS ALIVE. Orlando’s buried big man produced his best game of the year in a easy runaway v. Brooklyn. He led 8 guys in double figures, including another strong effort by Dewayne Dedmon (15 points).

*DISCLAIMER* You’re forgiven if these names mean absolutely nothing to you.

Takeaway: Elfrid Payton is on a roll. Brooklyn is…making vacation plans.

HORNETS 100, Sixers 85

(John Geliebter/USA TODAY Sports)

Stats Leaders:

PTS: Nicolas Batum – 19 | REBS: Batum – 12 | ASTS: Batum – 12

Top DOG of the Night: Nicolas Batum (19 points, 12 assists, 12 dimes)

Quick Recap: It’s Nic Batum’s world, we’re all just living in it. The game’s leader in each major category, Batum tallied his second trip-dub as a Hornet en route to an easy dub over Philly. Cody Zeller chipped in 18 points & 11 rebounds.

Takeaway: Charlotte’s goal to capture the 3 seed got a strong boost – they’re just 1.5 GB Atlanta 8 left to play. Philly, on the other hand, needs to win just 1 MORE GAME to avoid tying the worst record in NBA history.

Good luck!

37-year old Elton Brand turned back the clock: scored 7 points, pulled down 9 boards and even dove into the crowd!

Thunder 82, PISTONS 88

(Leon Halip/USA TODAY Sports)

Stats Leaders:

PTS: Russell Westbrook/Marcus Morris – 24 | REBS: Andre Drummond – 12 | ASTS: 3 tied – 6

Top DOG of the Night: Marcus Morris (24 points, 7 rebounds)

Quick Recap: Without KD & Serge Ibaka, OKC kept it close until the final moments. A late dunk by Reggie Jackson sealed the deal (and ticked off Russell Westbrook) and moved Detroit into 7th place.

Takeaway: There’s still a lot of bad blood between Jackson & the Thunder. Perhaps, Reggie was just excited about Detroit’s improving playoff prospects. Westbrook took notice of his (near) post-game celebration:

ROCKETS 106, Cavs 100

(Troy Taormina/USA TODAY Sports)

Stats Leaders:

PTS: Kyrie Irving – 31 | REBS: Dwight Howard/Kevin Love – 11 | ASTS: 3 tied – 8

Top DOG of the Night: James Harden (27 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds)

Quick Recap: Despite a 19-point hole to begin the second half, James Harden and the Rox still managed to come away with a hard-fought W in Cleveland. Michael Beasley (17 & 8) and Trevor Ariza (game-clinching triple) were amongst the key contributors who led the comeback.

“Tonight’s Michael Beasley Efficiency Grade” – 17 pts on 8-15 shooting = B- (for him!)

Takeaway: Houston maintains its lead over Dallas for 8th in the West. Meanwhile, Cleveland cannot seem to shut things own without LeBron James (rest).

Wizards 94, WARRIORS 102

(USA TODAY Sports)

Stats Leaders:

PTS: Stephen Curry – 26 | REBS: Draymond Green – 16 | ASTS: John Wall – 11

Top DOG of the Night: Stephen Curry (26 points, 7 assists, 7 rebounds, 5 steals)

Quick Recap: Washington led by ten midway through the second quarter. So naturally, the Dubs took control and put it out of reach. DRAYMOND had another big night – 15, 16, & 9.

*Did Steph Dunk? YES!*

Takeaway: GS needs to finish 6-2 the rest of the way to break Chicago’s 72-win mark from ’96.

WAS shot 5/23 on downtown and fell to 10th in the East.
