Cameron Payne (Sophomore, Murray State, @Joinmy_Campaign)
Point Guard/6’2/185/Age: 20
Product of…Lausanne Collegiate HS via Bartlett, Tennessee
20.2 points/game, 6 assists/game, 3.7 rebounds/game
Payne is a talented point guard who’s drastically climbed up draft boards the past few weeks. Hailing from Murray State, his exposure to a high-level of competition is a concern, similar to how pundits evaluated both Damian Lillard (Weber State) & Elfrid Payton (Louisiana-Lafayette) in previous years. Payne does not have the same franchise-PG potential like those two but he is a steady guard ready to run the offense and make plays on the break.
The savvy lefty was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year and is seen as a two-way threat in the league. Scouts really want him to add strength and cut down on turnovers and if Payne improves those two areas, he could work his way into the lottery.
-Good shooter; improving coming off curls and spotting up
-Effective playmaker; shows flashes of being a premiere floor general; advanced understanding of P&R
-Committed and willing defender; exciting to watch on him harass ball-handlers; loves to compete
-Has trouble taking care of the ball at times
-Struggles to finish plays at the rim; superior athletes (stronger, quicker, etc.) have given him trouble in the past
-Not a great athlete; since he does not overwhelm with physicality, often settles for difficult attempts
D.O.G. Status: Cameron Payne has the talent and work ethic to become another success story from a small school. His shooting percentage might be low initially but once he works on his body and gains a better understanding of how/when to pick spots, he can be special.
