Point Guard/6’1/190/Age: 18

Quick Stats

11.8 points/game, 5.6 assists/game, 3.5 rebounds/game

Tyus Jones was the straw that stirred the drink for the Duke Blue Devils. His poise and leadership was a perfect complement for senior Quinn Cook in the backcourt and he took no time developing amazing chemistry with fellow freshmen, Justise Winslow & Jahlil Okafor (friends since 9th grade). Scouts love his ability to penetrate and score without forcing the issue. The Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four, Jones imposed his will on Wisconsin during the second half (scored 19 of his 23 points) by attacking the pick and roll and being aggressive.

Jones is also adept at knocking down jumpers, particularly in clutch situations. Reminiscent of former Michigan Wolverine Trey Burke, we project him to have a similar impact in the NBA. If he declares, he will likely be chosen by a playoff team in the mid-late first round. The best-case scenario would be for Jones to be groomed along slowly with the opportunity to grow if he shows he can handle a larger role (like Atlanta’s Dennis Schroder).

-Good shooter and scorer; nice touch around the rim

-Very smart playmaker; knows how and when to attack the pick and roll; advanced court vision for his age

-Tough player who never backs down from big moments; the National Title game solidified him as an impressive clutch performer; improving defender

Tyus Jones NBA

-Not the fastest or quickest player around; could have difficulty staying with more imposing guards on defense

-Midrange game needs more work; at his size, teams will blitz him to take away three-pointers

-Got to the basket a good amount in college but lack of speed could hinder his ability to blow by superior athletes

D.O.G. Status: Tyus Jones definitely has the “IT” factor, with great momentum coming from Duke’s run to the top. Scouts question his size and athleticism but Jones is, at worst, a very nice backup point guard in the NBA.
