Long before VCU and Butler captured the hearts of college basketball fans, the modern-day Cinderella was none other than George Mason, a (then) little-known team hailing from the Patriot League. Led by coach Jim Larranaga and overlooked players like Jai Lewis, Tony Skinn and Will Thomas, they shocked the world and ran through an onslaught of “high majors” in the process.

Their improbable run to the 2006 FInal Four included impressive victories over Michigan State, North Carolina and the heavily-favored UCONN Huskies. As an 11 seed, they had everything stacked against their favor…but it didn’t matter. Their epic run was cemented in history as one of the greatest displays of resilience and teamwork the sport has seen. Relive their upset over top-seeded UCONN:

Every year, there’s a new Cinderella looking to crash the party and reach glory. Who’s it gonna be this year? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter (@delayofgameblog)! And stay tuned for more NCAA Tourney updates throughout the week!
