Christmas Day Fit For A King!

Exactly 20 years ago from today, Bernard King delivered a Christmas day miracle that no other player other than Tracy McGrady has come close to eclipsing. On December 25th, 1984, Bernard King scored 60 points at Madison Square Garden against the New Jersey Nets, becoming the fist (and only) player to do so.

By halftime, King had already totaled 40 points, on pace to score 80.

George T. Johnson of the Nets took on the responsibility of cooling off King in the second half and was halfway decent at the job although King was able to still score another 20. King finished the game shooting 63% from the field and shooting 84% from the free-throw line (on 26 attempts.)

Tracy McGrady is next in line in terms of Christmas Day scoring output, as he dropped 46 points against the Detroit Pistons in 2002.

King was a 5-year Knick who also played for the Nets, Jazz, Warriors, and [Washington] Bullets. His accolades include being a 4-time NBA All-Star, averaging 22.5 ppg, 5.8 rebs, and 3.3 assists. He was elected into the NBA hall of fame last season along with Gary Payton and Rick Pitino.

Take a look at Bernard King’s historic performance below:

Can any player possibly come close to this historic feat? Perhaps we shall find out tonight.
